The Eco-Friendly 2012 Award, created by the Vinibuoni d’Italia Guide (published by the Touring Club), will be officially consigned to the Soave Consorzio at the opening of the Merano International Wine Festival on November 5. The Consorzio was selected for its sustained effort on the ecological front. So let’s hear it for Soave – not only great wine but its producers are environmentally sensitive. Who could ask for more?

Lorenzo Simeoni, like most Italians, had never read a Shakesperare’s play. Two years ago he decided it was high time to remedy that situation. “I opened Romeo and Juliet and the first line my eyes fell upon was Romeo saying: Save me a piece of marzipan.” From that chance glance has grown the Suevi project. Suevis are marzipan-based cookies that Lorenzo developed from a 15th century recipe. Yesterday at Juliet’s House in Verona these tasty morsels were presented to a public that included both Romeo and Juliet. Suevis are designed to go with Recioto di Soave – and they do!
Yesterday, bloggers from around the world descended on the Soave zone. It was an eye opening experience for many of them. They had not realized the just how beautiful the landscape of the Soave Classico zone is. Nor had they realized the potential for Soave to produce complex, long-lived wines as well as fruity, floral easy drinking wines. I hope they are eagerly spreading the word that Soave can be considered a Fine Wine!
